(this is also hard on a spouse.) when i am searching for cognates of a given mari item across other languages, and i open a dictionary of some language to search for an expected word form, there is a big risk that i am distracted by some other word on that dictionary page that might relate to another mari item i am investigating. ultimately i end up going on tangent after tangent, and i lose sight of whatever word i was originally working on. this might be blamed on the common inability to focus in our modern internet era, but i’m sure i would have suffered the same thing back in the era of when etymologists just kept everything on note cards. i would be curious to know how many other linguists experience these same frustrations. there are certain etymologists with a reputation as quasi-autistic savants, who have a perfect mastery of the lexicons of every relevant language, and insights come to them entirely naturally. but surely many if not most scholars are like me, capable of tracing these connections but often finding them slippery and gained only with great effort. posted on february 24, 2018 june 13, 2018 categories languages 7 comments on the toll of doing etymological research new edition of äxmat’janov’s tatar etymological dictionary (and three mari loans of ‘fishing float’) back in 2001, rifkat’ äxmat’janov ( рифкать әхмәтьянов ) published a useful short etymological dictionary of tatar, татар теленең кыскача тарихи-этимологик сүзлеге ( казан : татарстан китап нәшриаты ). among those interested in tatar loanwords in mari, this dictionary might have gone somewhat overlooked, but äxmat’janov did mention in passing some hitherto undescribed mari borrowings of tatar vocabulary, and the dictionary is just as important a resource in a volga–kama comparative context as e.g. the publications of räsänen or isanbaev. well, it turns out that in 2015, äxmat’janov put out a new dictionary, татар теленең этимологик сүзлеге , considerably expanded from the original and now in two volumes. the two volumes can be found freely online in pdf format: [1] , [2] . some time ago i submitted a paper proposing some new tatar loanwords in mari, which should appear in print by the end of the year. one of the anonymous peer reviewers proved to have a vast knowledge of the tatar–mari language contact literature and pointed me to several publications i was previously unaware of, but even she missed this one. naturally, my first instinct when discovering this new dictionary was to look up each of the etymologies i proposed and see if äxmat’janov had beaten me to them. thankfully, he didn’t, though our paths came very close. in that forthcoming paper, i propose that marie kolko ‘fishing float’ is a borrowing from tatar, arguing against the etymology of fedotov in his chuvash etymological dictionary that the mari word was borrowed from chuvash. in the new dictionary, äxmat’janov (s.v. калкавыч ) doesn’t treat marie kolko , but he does mention a mari kalka . this is
